NAME()

The NAME() global function is a generic way to implement plugins which call things differently in different applications.

For example, universities have lots of different names for their top level division. They may have names like ‘Faculties’, ‘Departments’ or ‘Schools’, depending on the institution’s history.

It’s also available as:

There is a two argument version so longer phrases can be customised using the same system.

function NAME(name)

Returns a translated version of name.

The "std:NAME" service is called to look up the name, if it is implemented by any plugins.

Your "std:NAME" service function may be called during plugin load, as an exception to the usual service rules. This means that plugins can use NAME() to set up data structures, but it does mean you have to be very careful with the load order of your plugins.

If nothing translates the name, name is returned unaltered.

The result is cached.

function NAME(code, defaultName)

Looks up code using the same mechanism as the single argument version of NAME(), but if it isn’t translated, the value of defaultName will be returned.

Use this to allow longer messages to be replaced with customised defaults. The use of a code as a key, rather than the entire phrase, allows the default to be edited without updating all the customisations.

function O.interpolateNAMEinString(string)

Returns a new string with uses of NAME() replaced by translated sub-strings, as described in String interpolation below.

String interpolation

Forms and standard plugins provide an alternative use of NAME() through string interpolation.

When strings are interpolated, the pattern NAME(.+?) is replaced by translated text. Note that the text does not use quotes.

The two argument form uses a | character to separate the code and default name.

For example:

  "The NAME(Head of Department) should action this request."
  "Please review this NAME(std:workflow:notes-private-label|Private note)"

Use O.interpolateNAMEinString() to use string interpolation in your plugins.

Usage

Ordinary plugins just use the NAME() function in their code or templates. As a matter of style, try to restrict use of NAME() to templates:

  <div> "Destination: " NAME("Faculty") </div>
  <div> NAME("example:routing:committee" "This application will be routed to the Faculty committee.") </div>

and only when necessary as the JavaScript function:

var view = {
    destination: NAME("Faculty")
};

A plugin may translate names with a service such as:

P.implementService("std:NAME", function(name) {
    if(name === "ping") { return "pong"; }
});

Returning nothing or undefined will allow another service implementation to try translating a string.
